Prolific Wildlife Sightings & Encounters
First and foremost, Botswana is the ultimate wildlife destination. Home to some of the most prolific wildlife species on the African continent, very few countries can compare to the sheer diversity and sensational abundance of wildlife that reside in Botswana.
Botswana covers a total area of +/- 581,730 sq. km. Approximately 40% of this land forms part of a wildlife-protected area which serves as a sanctuary for the world’s largest concentration of elephants (primarily residing in Chobe National Park) as well as acts as a stronghold for other endangered mammals, including the black rhinoceros and African wild dog – which are only two of countless endangered wildlife species in Africa.
As Botswana boasts a plethora of unique and diverse landscapes, eco-systems, and habitats it gives avid wildlife lovers and newlyweds the incredible opportunity to see even the rarest of wildlife species.
Botswana is also unique in the fact that it supports large concentrations of wildlife, as well as several amazing species of birdlife, reptiles, and amphibians on both a seasonal and permanent basis. For avian enthusiasts, there is no better place in the world to see the Slaty Egret and Wattled Crane, not to mention the illusive Pels Fishing Owl, which is extremely rare with many birding enthusiasts having never seen one before. It comes as no surprise that travelling to Botswana and witnessing this incredible bird in its natural habitat for the very first time has been known to bring even the most avid of birdwatchers to tears.
Among its exceptionally diverse, vast, and varied wildlife and birdlife species, a visit to the premium wildlife destination of Botswana will almost guarantee sightings of the most famous of Africa’s mammals, the African Big Five of course (lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalos).
Here is a quick guide for the best chance of spotting the Big Five in Botswana – each of which should be on your Botswana African safari honeymoon bucket-list:
- Chobe National Park for the highest concentration of elephants.
- Savuti region for lion sightings.
- Northern Okavango to see the large Cape buffalo.
- Moremi Game Reserve will offer excellent rhino sightings.
- Mashatu Game Reserve plays host to the elusive leopard.
As a large portion of its land is dedicated to conservation, with a strict ban on virtually all hunting implemented in 2013, Botswana is a true haven for wildlife. As a result several of its protected areas, including the remarkable Chobe National Park, glorious Okavango Delta, and the incredible Moremi Game Reserve, rank among the best game viewing destinations in both Africa and the world.
Botswana’s wild unapologetic natural beauty, vastly diverse landscapes, pristine unfenced surroundings, and prolific wildlife population guarantees a truly authentic African safari and honeymoon experience.
That’s not all – Did you know that Botswana is famous for the second-largest zebra migration in the world, after the Serengeti? You can also experience a personal encounter with the Bushman as they take you on guided tours on foot – How fantastic is that?

Honeymoon in the Okavango Delta
Flanked on the east by the rolling savannah of the Savute and the sought-after elephant paradise of the Chobe National Park, together with the far-flung stretches of the Makgadikgadi saltpans and the semi-desert grasslands of the Kalahari in the south, the evergreen jewel of the Okavango Delta is at the heart of Botswana’s safari attractions.
The magnificent Okavango Delta is one of the world’s largest inland deltas as well as a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting adventure travellers, eager wildlife loving enthusiasts, and newlyweds from across the world. The glorious Okavango Delta was also voted as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa in 2013.
Deemed one of the world’s premier wilderness areas, the Okavango Delta is a vast and virtually untouched freshwater wetland that covers between 6 and 15 000 square kilometers of Kalahari Desert in northern Botswana and owes its existence to the Okavango (Kavango) River, which gives rise to the Okavango Delta’s dynamic ecosystem.
The Okavango River flows from the Angolan highlands, across Namibia’s Caprivi Strip, and into the harsh Kalahari Desert. Unlike most river deltas (which usually lead to an ocean), the Okavango River empties onto open land, flooding the savanna and creating a unique and ever-changing inland delta, attracting countless wildlife and birdlife species.
The Okavango Delta is affected by seasonal flooding, with flood water from Angola reaching the Delta between March and June, peaking in July. This peak flood season coincides with Botswana’s dry season, resulting in the great migration of plains game from the dry hinterland.
The Okavango Delta’s dry land is predominantly made up of numerous small islands. There are more than 150,000 islands, some of which are only a few meters wide, with the larger islands being longer than 10km’s. The Delta’s largest island is Chief’s Island, which is said to have been formed on a tectonic fault line.
Wildlife
Protected by numerous wildlife concessions within Ngamiland as well as the renowned Moremi Game Reserve on its eastern edge, Botswana’s Okavango Delta is an extremely prominent wildlife area. Through careful wildlife management, the Okavango Delta has established itself as one of the top destinations in Africa to see wildlife and birdlife roaming wild and free in their natural habitat.
A breathtaking oasis in an otherwise dry environment, the Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s most profound and prolific wildlife destinations. Home to an incredible diversity of birdlife and wildlife, entirely unmatched in Southern Africa, the Okavango Delta truly is one of Africa’s as well as the world’s greatest wilderness and wildlife destinations – Undoubtedly making it one of the top African safari honeymoon locations for all newlyweds and honeymooners.
During the Okavango Delta’s Dry Season (which takes place between April and October), approximately 260,000 mammals congregate around the Delta as water levels rise and Delta floods reach its peak. The Okavango Delta’s Dry Season is also the peak migration period for wildlife to the Delta. To further add to the excitement, the Okavango Delta is a world-famous stronghold for all major predators, including lion, leopard, and cheetah (to mention just a few).
Home to +/- 530 different bird species, the Okavango Delta is an excellent birding destination. For avian enthusiasts, there is no better place in the world to see the Slaty Egret, Wattled Crane, Bee-Eaters, and Kingfishers. not to mention the illusive Pels Fishing Owl (the world’s only fish-eating owl), which is exceptionally rare.
There is a dynamic seasonal shift of wildlife between the arid region that surrounds the Delta and the Okavango Delta itself. During the wet season (summer season), most large animals move away from the Delta to take advantage of the lush grazing and greenery surrounding it. As the Delta’s lush green surroundings begin to fade away and grazing opportunities become less and less as winter in the Okavango Delta officially kicks into high gear, wildlife make their way back to the Delta once again.
the winter, animals move back to the delta. The Okavango Delta is also known to attract a huge number of herbivores during its dry season, which, in turn, attracts several carnivores and predators as well.
**Extra Insight: As the Okavango Delta is at the center of Botswana’s safari industry, it features several of Africa’s premier Safari Camps, Resorts, and luxury Safari Lodges – Perfect for an African honeymoon filled with ample romance, copious amounts of excitement, remarkable wildlife and birdlife sightings, luxury accommodation, and SO much more.
